Sinusitis is one of respiratory infections most detected during the winter, making thousands of victims each year. However, the disease is in the vast majority of benign cases.

Definition

What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the lining located in the sinus. The structures corresponding to the bone cavities distributed in facial bones. Each sinus communicates with the nasal cavity through fine openings through which flows the mucus produced in the sinuses.

There are 4 pairs of sinuses and each has different names depending on its position, which is why there are several forms of sinusitis: we speak of frontal sinusitis, maxillary, sphenoid,  ethmoid ... The maxillary sinus is most common when other localizations are rare but are at risk of major complications.

We speak of acute sinusitis when it lasts a few weeks and did not reappear for more than three times a year. We talk about chronic sinusitis lasting more than two months and returns.

Cause

What is due sinusitis?
Sinusitis is usually caused by viral or bacterial infection. When bacteria spread into the sinuses, the lining becomes irritated and swells, obstructing the sinuses. While it is normally drained through the nose, mucus is no longer able to flow, allowing microorganisms to multiply freely.

The presence of mucus also causes an increase in the pressure in the sinuses. Sinusitis often occurs as a result of nasopharyngitis. But the diagnosis is relatively difficult and patients with purulent nose blowing and Headaches see sometimes detect an excess sinusitis. Other causes of sinusitis, there is a bacterial infection, allergies, nasal polyps, a deviated nasal wall, a tooth abscess or air pollution.

Sinusitis is characterized by typical symptoms which include:

  • A slight fever and a general malaise
  • A feeling of pressure in the area, or on one side (s)
  • A nasal congestion (stuffy nose), sneezing
Appear as nasal secretions that are, in the case of purulent sinusitis, yellowish or greenish, and transparent in the case of a viral sinusitis.

The frontal sinus, ethmoid and sphenoid are characterized by slightly different signs.

  • The frontal sinusitis causes pain giving the impression of beats and located above one eye, high fever (over 38.5 ° C) and a runny nose on one side
  • The sphenoid sinusitis is manifested by deep headache behind the eye and intense. The temperature is also high.
  • The sinusitis ethmoidal can be signaled by an eyelid swelling, and pain at the associated eye and a temperature above 38.5 ° C.
  • Acute sinusitis lasts about 2 weeks, but infection may be longer depending on the person. When the symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it is referred to as chronic sinusitis.

How to cure sinusitis?
When viral sinusitis cures in only a few weeks in 75% of cases. But it is possible to use natural treatments to relieve the first symptoms such as steam inhalation, salt water, etc. that which will allow to restore sinus drainage and reduce the pressure. It is also possible to use drugs.

This may be of analgesics, to mitigate the pain and headaches or antihistamines (only in case of allergy). If the pain is important, of the decongestants or corticosteroids may be prescribed. A nose wash frequently usually helps to eliminate sinusitis within days.

When the infection is bacterial, the antibiotics can be prescribed by the doctor. Treatment lasts 7 to 10 days and can slightly shorten the duration of sinusitis and mitigate the symptoms. Frontal sinusitis, sphenoid or ethmoid are often bacterial and therefore require antibiotics.

In the case of chronic sinusitis not responding to previous treatments, it is possible to resort to surgery. This is to drain the sinuses restoring openings to the nasal cavity, repositioning the nasal septum or nasal polyps removed favoring the disease.
